Green Lane

The brief was to replace a derelict agricultural building with a modern family home. With the green belt location, the size and position of the building was limited to what currently exists.

Whilst this was the starting point, the house became an exploration of sustainable and economic building practices.

Our approach

Whilst constrained by green belt planning policy, we have been able to create a five bedroom home on what is a beautiful site on the outskirts of South Manchester. The building volume and footprint needed to match the existing agricultural building and not have an adverse impact upon the greenbelt. The height of the building meant the main bedrooms are within the roof space with a “dormer” to the rear. As it has no impact on the openness of the greenbelt a further basement floor is proposed containing a gym, office, utility and guest suite. It is intended as a net-zero home, with material re-use and passive building systems being the main driver.
