Our approach

The brief was to reimagine this Edwardian home and enhance the living spaces through contemporary design. The ground floor extends the current snug into a new open living space that expands into the garden. A new utility, cloakroom and WC are relocated to the centre of the plan, saving the natural light for the main spaces. Elsewhere, the house has been fully refurbished with a classic, timeless aesthetic including a new extended master suite and workspace on the top floor.

Upon entering the home, a view opens  up through the snug to the living space beyond. The vista continues via a bookshelf, animated by light from above, towards a large window seat that frames the garden. The main space includes a dining area and kitchen with sliding doors that open onto the patio.

The conservation area context partly influences the materiality of the extension, with the traditional palette of cheshire red brick, sandstone and lead found elsewhere on the exterior of the house. Such materials are known for their solidity but juxtaposed with large expanses of glass a more unique character and charm comes forth. The cheshire brickwork is capped with a smooth red brick that steps the wall back to create a plinth for the sandstone that wraps around the roof. The lead work is also celebrated with the joints highlighted  to demonstrate the craftsmanship involved.

The top floor master suite incorporates an expanded glass and lead dormer window that floods the roof with light; connecting the space with the surrounding treetops. Storage is maximised with built-in cabinetry forming a walk-in wardrobe, adjacent to which is an en-suite bathroom.
